Fun fact: although you only ever see the front four teeth degus actually have 20 teeth, and they grow at a rate of around 1cm per month! Healthy teeth should be orange, white teeth show a lack of minerals.
A few months ago Thomas knocked out his two front teeth at the top, I think due to a sharp impact. I took Thomas to the vet who confirmed that he hadn’t lost them due to illness and that both the roots were still there even though there was no visible tooth left on one side.
Thomas easily managed to figure out how to eat while his teeth grew back and a week and a half later you couldn’t tell they were ever missing.

Sam (whilst standing on a sheet of kitchen roll): Why won’t this kitchen roll move? I need to tidy it away in to the bed.
Today I learnt that my degus find hiccups scary :-S

Huddles!

Degus enjoying their sand bath
What’s a degu?
A degu is a small rodent who is diurnal
Which means they let you sleep at night
Their energy seems to be eternal
Be careful introducing new degus for they will fight
Degus are smart little critters
Who can be trained with bribes treats
When it comes to getting food they’re not quitters
A degu is always happy when it eats
Degus are little antidepressants
They provide non-human social interaction
They cheer me up just with their presence
Seeing their progress gives me satisfaction
They’re sharp little balls of fur
And some day, when they’re happy, they may even purr

Om nom nom tasty dandelion
