IMPORTANT HEAT WAVE POST:
Good afternoon pet lovers! Whilst we’re enjoying the sun and gorgeous heat in the UK right now, with highs of 30°C+ where I am – your pets, especially chinchillas, may not be having a great time and may be finding the heat hard. This heat can be fatal. So here’s a few tips to keep your chinchilla cool:
(NOTE: Cooling your chinchilla down too quickly can force them into shock so please, be careful.)
Put your sand bath in the fridge with sand so they can have a cool bath.
Buy air-conditioning and make sure they have a cooling mat/marble slate that’s been kept in the fridge.
If your chin is slow and inactive, offer food and cold water, ice cube, or piece of fruit.
Move your chin to a small carry cage and pop them in front of an open freezer.
Chins lose heat in their feet and ears so pay close attention to their temperature when you do any of these things.
If your Chins are slow to respond, immobile or labored breathing or suffering from diarrhea then contact a vet immediately! Signs of overheating are:
Rapid or shallow breathing
Tongue and gums bright red
Bright red ears with blood vessels enlarged.
Thick, stringy saliva
Laying on their side and not responding to movement close by.Have fun and keep your pets safe!
