I gave the little guys two small peppers, Scott and Jack each took one. Scott ran off to a corner to eat his and was left in peace. Daniel and Sam chased Jack around the cage trying to get his pepper.

I took Jack’s pepper and broke it in to three pieces and offered one to Daniel and Sam who looked completely disinterested. Jack came over and grabbed it out of my hand and said “I’ll take that back now, that was mine!”.

Daniel and Sam only wanted the pepper because Jack had it, they weren’t actually at all interested in eating it. Silly degus.

This morning’s alarm clock goes by the name of Sam. He was squeaking, not sure what spooked him, but I can’t really hold it against him because of the way he stops squeaking as soon as I pick him up. He instantly calms down and becomes happier. That’s worth being woken up early for.

Tail injury

Scott lost part of his tail at some point before we got him, he’s got a shorter, stubbier tail than usual and the tip isn’t covered with fur. It isn’t usually a problem; we unfortunately had to confiscate his plastic wheel they usually have access to when they’re out for a run (they have huge metal wheels in their cage) because the wheel had ridges and his tail was being rubbed raw as he ran. Apparently he loved that wheel too much to be bothered by it.

Scott’s tail tip sometimes cracks and bleeds a bit because it’s not protected by any fur. The vet suggested that I try some Vaseline on it and assured me that even if he licks it off it’s perfectly safe for him.

After putting Vaseline on Scott’s tail tip daily for the last week it’s no longer cracked and looks much better.
