Thomas was wary of investigating the new hammock, after realising there was puffed rice he decided it was worth the risk.

When I was putting the hammock in the cage Tobias decided it was bedding and tried to run off with it.

Important reminder

Please be careful what you put in the cage with your rodents and consider whether there could be any threads they can get tangled in as they chew it.

Daniel recently got his paw caught, I didn’t immediately notice and by the time I saw it his paw was swollen to four times it’s usual size. If it had been caught any longer/tighter he could have lost his paw.

Please be really careful with what you give your pets to play with and regularly check toys for damage.

Dust anon here. Yeah they Finally got some hay into their diet and they love it lol. They have lots of toys and a two big wheels to play with and i play with them multiple times throughout the day. The only issue they have atm is not having a big enough cage. 26″L x 14″W x 20″H is the height of their cage and i know that Gogo would love to have more space but i dont have enough money atm and not enough room in the house. I orginally had them in a big old rabbit hutch but they kept escaping ;-;

Gogo (the dust eater) Is the more Active degu, it doesnt seem to be harming her in any either she is still hyper and curious.

It sounds as though they have lots of enrichment. I’m glad to hear they’re enjoying their hay. I don’t know why Gogo has started eating dust. I would keep a close eye on her for any other changes in behaviour or change in weight and if you’re concerned contact a vet. I’m sorry I can’t give you a definitive answer.

my degus have been eating their dust recently? do you know why?

Hi 😊 This isn’t a behaviour I’ve come across myself and it sounds strange to me. From what I can find on Google it seems that this is a normal behaviour and may aid with digestion. You say they started doing this recently, has there been a change in their diet? Could they have eaten something they shouldn’t have? Are your degus are otherwise healthy, has there been a sudden change in weight?

I asked my vet (I was seeing her today anyway) and it’s not something she’s come across before either. She was wondering how much dust they’re eating? Could it be a sign of boredom? How much enrichment do they have, do they have other things to chew on? I know even if my guys have plenty to chew on they still like to go for the things they’re not meant to eat so it may be that they’re choosing to ignore all the appropriate things they have. It could be a sign of an underlying condition. Have there been any other recent changes in behaviour?

I’m seeing my vet again tomorrow and will add to this if she’s found out anything else.

If you’re concerned you could talk to a vet, it’s impossible to know whether there’s more to this without further information.

I hope your degus are ok, let me know how they get on 😊
