Me: my pet hasn’t been well today but he seems to have been feeling better for a few hours now and should be ok, at least for today
Also me: but I’m still going to sit with him until the vet’s close, just in case

When I’m about to let the degus out for their run they often pull at the door to try and get out and I undo the locking mechanism and they’re still pulling at the door and I’m there like if you stopped pulling at the door you’d be out by now?
Sometimes I’ll marvel at how daft my degus are, they’ll do something and fall and then go to do exactly the same thing again as though they’re expecting a different result. At some point I realised that the second time they do get a different result because I anticipate what’s about to happen and stop them from falling.
Me: no. no. No.
Degu: Oh. I thought you said yes.

Iām not very good at talking about the degusā health problems while theyāre ongoing, Iām generally too busy being stressed and doing everything I can for them to deal with anything else.
On Wednesday I thought Daniel was going to die this week (spoiler: he didnāt). He was in for a dental on Monday, came round well, ate a bit on Tuesday and then refused all food on Wednesday morning. I went through every type of treat we have. We saw a vet (who is not our usual vet) and just got āforce feed him. what else can you do?ā. He didnāt even address the fact that there must be a cause for Daniel refusing all food (I spoke to my usual vet the next day and got actual veterinary care for Daniel).
The whole thing was strongly resembling Thomasās last week and I really thought I was going to loose Daniel. Heās eating independently (nothing thatās his usual diet but right now Iām happy that heās eating anything) and thereās been some improvement.
Unfortunately the rate at which the tumour on his leg is growing means itās pretty certain that it is cancer. Itās on too much of his leg for removing only the tumour to be an option, there wouldnāt be enough skin to close up the operation site afterwards, so the only option would be to remove the leg. With it being a back leg this would severely affect him, much more so than losing a front leg would.
All I can do for now is wait and see what happens, spend time with him while I can and regularly remind all of you how amazing Daniel is and how much I love him!

Pet name and species: Daniel, degu
Nicknames: Dangoo
Age: Iām not sure because heās a rescue but at a guess Iād say heās 6 years old
Favourite treat: pea flakes
Favourite object/toy: heat pad
Silly habit: sometimes Daniel pulls all of the kitchen roll out of the bed box and sleeps curled up in it in front of the bed
How clever are they: Daniel will usually come over when called, but will also walk right past food to come see if I have any food
Do you have them trained or do they have you trained: a bit of both
Random fact: Daniel is the easiest of my degus to use for staged photos because I can give him some food and he will sit still while he eats it
